Annie's Book Stop: Annie's has been America's leading pre-read book store since its beginning in the early 1970s. The original Annie, Anne Landry, started swapping and selling paperbacks in a small store she opened in Westborough, Massachusetts. So many customers liked the idea so much that before long Anne was in the franchising business. Soon there were franchises throughout the New England states, and eventually as far as Florida and California. Although most Annie's offer a wide variety of new books and related items, the backbone of the business is pre-read, half-priced paperbacks traded-in for credit by customers. When you bring in your pre-read books in good condition to an Annie's, you will receive credit that you can use toward the purchase of other pre-read books at that store. While the exact amount of credit may vary slightly from store to store, it usually is about 1/6 of the original selling price of the book. Thus, in most Annie's, a $5.99 paperback is worth one dollar in credit. If you buy another $5.99 paperback for cash, it will cost you $2.99 at Annie's. You can apply the $1.00 credit for the book you traded in for a net cost of $1.99 for you! Then, when you finish reading your new book, you can return it and get another dollar in credit for it. This system makes reading fun and affordable!
